Families and Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports
Although Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBiS) is commonly implemented in school settings, the philosophy, principles, and approach have also been utilized in the home, family, and community settings. Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports in the home looks similar to implementation at a school on a smaller scale.
Here are some sample components that may be in place when a family is implementing PBIS at home.
Family/Adults:
- Select 3-5 expectations (e.g., Safety, Responsibility, and Respect)
- Define the expectations across family routines
Example:
| |
Morning |
After School |
Dinner Time |
| Safety |
|
- Adults should only answer the door to strangers
|
|
| Responsible |
- Get up & turn off your alarm
|
- Complete homework before all other activities (e.g. video games)
|
|
| Respect |
|
|
- Ask that food is passed to you that is out of reach
|
Teach the expected behaviors during routines (e.g., adults should model and have children practice, as appropriate to age and skill)
- Establish a recognition system to acknowledge respectful and safe behavior in the home
- Establish a correction system that emphasizes consistency, re-teaching, and consideration of behavior function (e.g., reprimanding a child at length may not be an effective consequence following a problem behavior, if the child is seeking adult reaction, response, or attention)
- Create a simple way to track daily/weekly progress towards building or sustaining a safe and caring family environment
- Schedule regular family meetings to address concerns and celebrate successes
